Episode Six: One Mother’s Journey: Securing Residential Services for a Daughter with Autism
In this recent podcast episode, Maria Fischer, an attorney and mother of a daughter with autism, shared her inspiring journey of securing residential services for her daughter, Tracy. Maria described the challenges her family faced, including the 12-year wait to access housing, as well as the emotional decision-making involved. Through careful planning and collaboration with support teams, Tracy successfully transitioned into her own home, gaining independence and enriching her social life.
Key Takeaways
Start Early: Getting on the waiting list for residential services as soon as you’re eligible ensures access to future supports.
Individualized Approach: Every person’s needs are different. Maria’s team tailored Tracy’s transition to fit her specific behavioral and emotional needs.
Guardianship as Support: Guardianship empowered Maria to advocate for her daughter while also respecting Tracy’s growing independence.
